Sardar Vallabbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat was set up in the year 1961 as one of the
17 Regional Engineering Technology colleges (RECs) of the country. A joint venture between the
Central Government and the government of Gujarat, the main purpose with which the institute
was established was to impart good technical education in the state.
The institute, which presently holds the status of a Deemed University, started with just three
undergraduate degree courses in engineering- Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
Today the institute not only has added more disciplines in its undergraduate degree courses but also
offers engineering education at post graduate level. The institute fills up 50 percent seats in any
course with the students from Gujarat and rest from the students of other states. The institute has
a huge campus with facilities of banking, dispensary, Post office and a guest house.
