The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is an apex body of education which runs under the supervision of Controlling Authority - the Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. CBSE consists of a number of advisory committees. The board has a full time chairman designated as Chief Executive of the Board appointed by Controlling Authority. The Chief Administrative Officer (Secretary of the Board) is liable for all matters related to accounts, administration, affiliation, establishment, grievances, legal, public relations, and property of the board etc. The chief administrative officer also looks after the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) examination.

CBSE has following objectives-
  • To prescribe conditions of examinations and conduct public examinations at the end of Class X and XII. To grant qualifying certificates to successful candidates of the affiliated schools.
  • To fulfill the educational requirements of those students whose parents were employed in transferable jobs.
  • To prescribe and update the courses of instructions for examinations.
  • To affiliate institutions for the purpose of examination and raise the academic standards of the country.
The Board also promotes :-

Innovations in teaching learning methodologies by devising student friendly and student centered paradigms.

  • Reforms in examinations and evaluation practices.
  • Skill learning by adding job oriented and job linked inputs.
  • Regularly updating the pedagogical skills of the teachers and administrators by conducting inservice training programmes, workshops, etc.

The controller of examination & Director address all the matters related to examination - be these administrative or confidential. The Academic Director of CBSE looks behind development of syllabi, text, publication etc. Academic Director also take care for In service teacher training and other academic projects. Different CBSE committees look after its functioning. The role of different CBSE committees are mentioned here in brief-

Affiliation -The affiliation committee grants affiliation to schools / institutions . The committee also fix qualification for teachers at different standard, constitutes inspection panels and furnish suggestions on affiliation bylaws etc.

Curriculum -This committee looks after school curriculum at different level. Committee also looks after affiliation and renewal curriculum.

Examinations- The responsibilities of examination committee includes; appointment of paper setters, moderators; Fixation of maximum / minimum pass criteria / marks; Duration of Exams.; Complaints about Qpts., etc.

Finance -The Finance Committee looks after revision Of rates of fees; Payments For work Pertaining to exam./ affiliation

PMT - Any policy decision to be taken with regard to the conduct of All India Pre-Medical / Pre-Dental Examination; Projects

The main function of the CBSE is to granting affiliation to school. Any school which has granted CBSE affiliation has to run according to CBSE guidelines. These schools also have to follow 10 + 2 system of curriculum of study as suggested by CBSE. About 200 new schools acquire CBSE affiliation in each year.
