Science, an optional stream (besides arts and Science) is offered at the 10+2 or the
Higher Secondary level. This is the stage when a student gets basic knowledge or
fundamentals to go for higher studies in a particular subject of his/her interest.
Science education is offered at University departments and colleges, starting from
Under Graduate to research level. Specializations are offered both at undergraduate
and post graduate level.
At the undergraduate level the important areas of study in science are Physics,
Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology etc. Apart from this one can also pursue
courses in agricultural sciences. The degree is offered with or without Honours.
A candidate can go for B.Sc in Applied Sciences and Computer Sciences. Applied science
includes courses like Microbiology, Bio-Chemistry and Home Science etc.
At the post graduate level one can go for specialization in any of the subjects taken at the
undergraduate level. Whereas at the M.Phil and PhD level a candidate can go for any of the
topics or area of interest that he has covered at the graduate and the post graduate
levelHonorary doctorate degrees are awarded for outstanding contributions in particular
fields of study or work.There are numbers of Universities / Institutions / Departments
running across the globe which offer programs in various scientific disciplines through
their dedicated departments. A number of Apex Organizations both in India and Overseas are
also involved in providing education and training in different science disciplines.
The universities and professional bodies conduct entrance examinations / qualifying examinations
like, Under Graduate Entrance Test (UGET), Post Graduate Entrance Test (PGET) etc for admission.
However, in some cases direct admissions are also offered to students on the basis of marks
obtained in their last qualifying examinations.
Some universities / institutes / colleges / departments conduct written test, interview, group discussions
etc for admission. The admission criterion varies largely depending on the institute / department profile,
course popularity, marketability, and the number of applicants etc.The Indian Universities / Institutions
and Colleges offers admission into different B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree programs, or research programs etc
according to guidelines laid by University Grants Commission (UGC) of India or the state governments
as the case may be. These programs are at times also backed by different technical and scientific
associations like, AICTE, CSIR, ICAR, ICMR etc.
