NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced a modification to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) pattern for 2025. On Thursday, the NTA announced that the optional question format in Section B, which was introduced as a temporary measure during the COVID-19 pandemic, will no longer be available. Under the previous format, students had the flexibility to answer any 5 out of 10 numerical questions in Section B for each subject.

This flexible format, introduced in 2021 to accommodate the challenges posed by the pandemic, was in effect until the 2024 exams. However, starting from JEE Main 2025, Section B will contain only 5 numerical questions per subject, all of which must be answered. This marks a return to the pre-2021 format.
The NTA has also revealed that the application process for the first phase of JEE Main 2025 will open shortly. Detailed information will be made available on the NTA’s official website. Additional updates regarding the examination pattern will be shared once the registration process starts.
The JEE Main, a national-level entrance examination for engineering courses, is divided into three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam lasts for three hours and comprises a total of 90 questions, with 30 questions per subject. Each subject is further divided into two parts: Section A, which includes 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), and Section B, which contains 10 numerical questions. Under the updated pattern, all five numerical questions in Section B are now mandatory.
