Maharashtra Government Doubles Pension of Freedom Fighters

The Maharashtra Government has decided to increase the monthly pension for independence warriors from 10,000 to 20,000 rupees. As a result, the Goa Liberation Movement, Marathwada Mukti Sangram, and other freedom fighters connected to the Indian freedom war will gain from this choice.

This will benefit around 6,229 surviving patriots across Maharashtra who had taken part in India’s freedom struggle (1947), the Marathwada Liberation struggle (1948) and the Goa Liberation movement (1961). The largesse will entail an additional annual burden of Rs 74.75 crore on the state exchequer, for the pension scheme launched way back in 1965.

It was intended to recognise the contributions of all those who took part in several of these historical and nationalistic movements in the past which finally led to the integration of the country.

Ministers Panel May Recommend 28% GST on Online Gaming

Regardless of whether an online game is a skill game or a game of chance, the panel of state finance ministers is likely to suggest a standard GST rate of 28 percent.

Currently, online gaming attracts 18 percent GST. The tax is levied on gross gaming revenue, which is the fees charged by online gaming portals.

The Group of Ministers report is almost final and would be submitted to the GST Council soon for consideration. However, it is likely to suggest a revised formula for calculating the amount on which the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The Group of Ministers (GoM), chaired by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, had in its earlier report submitted to the Council in June suggested a 28 percent GST on the full value of the consideration, including contest entry fee, paid by the player, without making a distinction such as games of skill or chance. However, the Council had asked the GoM to reconsider its report.
