Indian Footwear and Leather Development Program Continued
The Ministry of Commerce recently announced that the Indian Footwear and Leather Development Program (IFLDP) will continue from 2021-22 till 2026.
Highlights:
- The program is to be implemented for Rs 1,700 crores. IFLDP will develop infrastructure for the leather sector.
- It`ll facilitate additional investment and increase the assembly of leather goods. The program will provide employment opportunities.
- The program will provide Rs 500 crores of monetary for technological up-gradation. The sectoral units shall use this amount for their modernization.
- Also, the program will provide Rs 100 crores of monetary assistance for developing design studios.
- They`re going to facilitate buyer-seller meet, promote export linkages, organize trade fairs, and display the designs to the international buyers. Overall, the studios will interface between the buyers and sellers.
- The program will help India achieve many of its sustainable development goals. It`ll also help reduce poverty, increase the economic process, promote gender equality, infrastructural development, etc.

Need:
- The leather manufacturing clusters are fragmented. They`re located in various parts of the country.
- It`s greatly affected thanks to poverty faced by the producers and gender inequality. Also, India lacks sector-specific skills and education.
- Not many are conscious of the leather-making processes and techniques. People that are already in the business lack technical skills. The program will address these issues.
Financial Plan:
- The Government of India will provide 50% financial assistance, and they help limit is fixed at Rs 10 crores. Every brand will get this assistance.
- The financial assistance is to be provided for 3 years. This is often to market the Indian brands at the international market.
