UN WFP Signs MoU To Improve PM POSHAN Scheme:
The United Nations World Food Program, UN – WFP, has reached an agreement with a Bengaluru-based NGO to strengthen the effectiveness of PM – POSHAN (Non-Governmental Organization).
Highlights:
- The acronym for Pradhan Mantri POshan SHakti Nirman is Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman. The programme was previously known as the Mid-Day Meal Program.
- The agreement was signed by the Akshara Patra Foundation and the Akshara Patra Foundation.
- The World Food Programme has provided financial assistance to PM POSHAN Shakti Nirman. It will assist schools in improving their mid-day meal programmes.
- A steering committee will be formed by the NGO. The World Food Programme, government agencies, and non-governmental organisations will be represented on the committee.
- The committee will meet four times a year. It will develop plans, evaluate existing programmes, and implement necessary changes to strengthen the country`s mid-day meal programme.
PM POSHAN Scheme
- It was approved in September 2021. It will be in effect for five years, until 2026. The project`s implementation is expected to cost Rs 1.31 trillion.
- The mid-day lunch programme is now part of this strategy. The PM – POSHAN made a number of changes to the mid-day meal programme.
- The central government would deposit funds directly into the accounts of the schools covered by PM - POSHAN.
- This is done to prevent money from escaping. Balavatika has also been added to the PM – POSHAN list.
- Balavatika is a pre-school for children aged six and under. The total number of beneficiaries now stands at 24 lakhs.
