The 34th National Games has closed on 26 February at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, Ranchi with a colourful closing ceremony. The competitions were held in 33 disciplines. Services emerged as the best sporting unit with a whopping haul of 70 gold, 50 silver and 42 bronze medals for a total of 162, a tally that surpassed its previous best of 59-46-37 achieved at the last Games in 2007. The second place was got by the Manipur with 48-37-33, with the total of 118 medals. Richa Mishra of Delhi and Virdhawal Khade of Maharashtra,(both are swimmers) were adjudged as the Best female and male athletes of the Games, were awarded IOA Trophies. Richa Mishra has won total 16 medals including 11 gold medals. Services were given the Raja Phaedra Trophy which was received by Air Marshal J.N. Verma on behalf of the Services Sports Control Board. This win helped Manchester United to move up in the English Premier League rankings. Birmingham gained three points in the rankings thanks to the one and only winning goal scored by its player Lee Bowyer. Newcastle lost 5-1 to Bolton while West Ham lost 3-0 to Liverpool alongside Blackpool and Stoke who claimed their respective victories. In their game against Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea let slip past their initial lead of 2-0, to finally lose the game at a score of 3-2. Rumors recently originated that cricket had been removed from the list of proposed sports and events of the 2014 Asian games. The reason for these rumors has been said to be the decision of the Olympic Committee of Asia to limit the number of sporting events in the Asian games to a maximum of 35.
